HAVANA BAR

14/20

Good Food Guide - - Wellington -

This quirky back-street restaurant and bar, housed in a pair of colourful early 20th-century cottages, has a magnetic appeal. The vibe is always humming, and whether you’ve popped in for a quick drink or a leisurely dinner, you can’t help but have a good time. The menu comprises Spanish-leaning shared plates that make the most of seasonal ingredients – think pork oysters with Oloroso, oregano and confit tamarillos, or chargrilled beef bavette, wild mushroom and lapsang souchong cream with parsnip chips. Desserts are pretty decent too, with a Santiago tart with poached quinces and Oloroso sherry ice cream a recent high point. The cheery, knowledgeable staff are happy to help you make selections from the carefully chosen wine list, and the cocktail and beer offerings are both extensive and excellent. 32a-34 Wigan St, Te Aro, ph: 04-383 7039, havanabar.co.nz Lunch & dinner 7 days; large shared plates $22-$25 IN BRIEF Quirky-cool spot serving tasty tapas
