A casual alternative to Herzog winery’s more formal finedining restaurant set in the same beautiful grounds, the bistro is warm and inviting. The menu is small, celebrating local ingredients and featuring bistro classics like beef tartare – Herzog’s excellent rendition, with egg yolk and daikon radish, is a perfectly composed combination of textures – alongside innovative combinations like Aoraki salmon with pickled root vegetables and green tea cream. Catch of the day was another recent seafood highlight, the crispy-skinned red snapper resting on a fragrant chickpea curry. Waitstaff are welcoming, their service dedicated to ensuring guests’ needs are well anticipated, and the impressive array of Herzog wines on offer is a big bonus. 81 Jeffries Rd, Wairau Valley, ph: 03-572 8770, herzog.co.nz Lunch & dinner Wed-sun (bistro closed until 14 Sept 2016); mains $30-$36 IN BRIEF Elegant food in pleasant winery surrounds
