Tucked away on the out­skirts of Wanaka, ad­join­ing the golf course and over­look­ing moun­tains and lake, Bistro Gen­til is desti­na­tion din­ing at its best. There are beau­ti­ful views, a warm and wel­com­ing in­te­rior, sprawl­ing grounds, an im­pres­sive art col­lec­tion and an Eno­matic wine dis­pens­ing sys­tem (this ba­si­cally means you can get se­ri­ously good wines by the half-glass and glass). Mostly though, there’s chef James Sta­p­ley’s world-class food. Chang­ing the menu fre­quently, Sta­p­ley, head chef Mario Ro­drigues and their team use Cen­tral Otago’s best in­gre­di­ents, cre­at­ing beau­ti­ful plates such as beef tartare with crumbed egg yolk, soy jelly and shaved radish, or a goat’s cheese mousse served with plum puree, beet­root and grains.
