Good Food Guide - - Central Otago -

Tucked away on the outskirts of Wanaka, adjoining the golf course and overlooking mountains and lake, Bistro Gentil is destination dining at its best. There are beautiful views, a warm and welcoming interior, sprawling grounds, an impressive art collection and an Enomatic wine dispensing system (this basically means you can get seriously good wines by the half-glass and glass). Mostly though, there’s chef James Stapley’s world-class food. Changing the menu frequently, Stapley, head chef Mario Rodrigues and their team use Central Otago’s best ingredients, creating beautiful plates such as beef tartare with crumbed egg yolk, soy jelly and shaved radish, or a goat’s cheese mousse served with plum puree, beetroot and grains. Service is stellar (special mention to the excellent Kenny Vaugh) and the whole experience quite delightful. 76a Golf Course Rd, Wanaka, ph: 03-443 2299, bistrogen Dinner Wed-sun; mains $35-$44
