MADAM WOO

14.5/20

Cuisine - Good Food Guide - - Central Otago -

Owned by Josh Emett and Fleur Caulton of Rata, this Queenstown eatery was the first of four Madam Woos to open around the country, and it’s a great spot – buzzy atmosphere, well-thought-out, on-theme decor and a fun drinks list. Malaysian hawker food is the name of the game, which means big, punchy flavours – think Kum Heongstyle soft shell crab with crisp curry leaves, dried shrimp, ginger and onion, or Chinese five-spice-braised tofu with mushrooms, chilli and fried shallot oil. Flavours are authentic and well-balanced, thanks to Malaysian-born head chef Jane Yeong and her team. Waitstaff are friendly and knowledgeable and there’s an extensive and excellent by-the-glass wine list – mention must go to the amusing but helpful descriptions under each entry – plus plenty of great cocktail and beer options to boot. 5 The Mall, Lower Ballarat St, Queenstown, ph: 03-442 9200, madamwoo.co.nz/queenstown
