AUGUSTUS BISTRO

Cuisine - Good Food Guide - - Auckland -

14/20 In our modern restaurant scape, where diners are constantly chasing the new, a classic French bistro seems almost radical. The likes of French onion soup and confit duck a l’orange are presented at Augustus with no flourishes to hide behind – simply great ingredients, cooked to traditional recipes with integrity and skill. The wine list has a fittingly Francophile bent, and most staff are able to advise you on its merits. Once the Three Lamps post office, the building’s been beautifully renovated, with plenty of greenery enlivening the classic marble, crisp white tablecloths and dark wooden furniture. Given that Augustus’s owners, Chris and Courtney Rupe, are the people who brought us Ponsonby’s SPQR, it’s perhaps no surprise that Augustus also has a twinkle in its eye. 1-3 St Marys Rd, St Marys Bay, 09 950 4855, augustusbistro.co.nz Lunch & dinner 7 days; mains $28.50-$39.50 Classic French bistro IN BRIEF with je ne sais quoi
