PONSONBY ROAD BISTRO
This Ponsonby stalwart casually charms visitors to the city and keeps local fans returning with excellent hospitality. Expertly executed modern bistro fare by Sarah Conway is matched by warm, keenly attentive service from Melissa Morrow, Blair Russell and their teams. Well-honed classics such as steak frites and confit duck leg showcase traditional techniques while also making room for a few gentle twists in flavour and texture. The smaller dishes tend to be more explorative, such as the delightfully umami and tart/ sweet clams with pork mince in a savoury broth with chilli, spring onion, coriander and black vinegar. Wine knowledge is exemplary, as is the wine list, and an afternoon menu offers the perfect foil for a cocktail or two up at the long, central bar.
