A tiny 20-seater restaurant in the heart of Kings­land, Phil’s Kitchen sits some­where be­tween sim­ple bistro eat­ing and fine din­ing. Mod­ern, fresh in­gre­di­ents are the in­spi­ra­tion be­hind ev­ery mouth­ful, and chef-owner Phil Clark (above) uses the skills he’s learned at Auck­land restau­rants like Mered­iths and Si­dart, as well as in Euro­pean Miche­lin-starred eater­ies, to cre­ate some clever and in­no­va­tive dishes. You might start with a de­light­ful cheese brioche, fol­lowed by beau­ti­fully cooked delights like pan-roasted ha­puku with shaved black truf­fle slices, then fin­ish with float­ing is­lands with car­damom anglaise, honey, pis­ta­chio and al­monds, or lemon par­fait with soft meringue and rasp­berry. Din­ers are looked af­ter with care by Clark’s French part­ner Marine Peyregne, and the wine list is small and in­ter­est­ing.
