Hayes Com­mon’s food is thought­fully and cre­atively com­piled, with each dish a de­li­cious combo of top-qual­ity in­gre­di­ents and great global flavours. This is neigh­bour­hood din­ing at its best, de­liv­ered by owner-op­er­a­tors Lisa and Brent Quar­rie, who are both trained chefs. Their sunny eatery – in skil­fully re­fur­bished vin­tage premises near the Waikato River – has a loyal fol­low­ing thanks to its well-earned rep­u­ta­tion for friendly charm and a high stan­dard of food, ser­vice and drinks. The evening menu is de­signed to be shared; it in­cludes such plea­sures as pork osso bucco with fen­nel, orange and roasted leek, and mar­ket fish with ure­nika pota­toes, heir­loom car­rots and black bean vinai­grette. Big ta­bles ac­com­mo­date groups in warm-hearted sur­round­ings.
