Cuisine - Good Food Guide - - Wellington -

There are restaurants that provide what they think the public wants – and then there are the likes of Hillside Kitchen and Cellar. This daring approach to exploring new avenues in food means diners can let themselves be led up the garden path at this tiny Thorndon venue, foraging all the way. The eclectic menu changes daily, which means you’re unlikely to ever eat the same thing twice. The food is clever, inspiring and challenging in equal parts, with strong links to the local terroir – think wafer-thin slices of cured raw duck served with buttery mash and runny egg yolk. Jovial Jules van Costello curates the creative drinks list with aplomb, while co-owner Asher Boote (above) works his magic on phenomenal produce. If you’re in the mood for some adventurous eating and drinking, this is the place.
