There are restau­rants that pro­vide what they think the pub­lic wants – and then there are the likes of Hill­side Kitchen and Cel­lar. This dar­ing ap­proach to ex­plor­ing new av­enues in food means din­ers can let themselves be led up the gar­den path at this tiny Thorn­don venue, for­ag­ing all the way. The eclec­tic menu changes daily, which means you’re un­likely to ever eat the same thing twice. The food is clever, in­spir­ing and chal­leng­ing in equal parts, with strong links to the lo­cal ter­roir – think wafer-thin slices of cured raw duck served with but­tery mash and runny egg yolk. Jovial Jules van Costello cu­rates the cre­ative drinks list with aplomb, while co-owner Asher Boote (above) works his magic on phe­nom­e­nal pro­duce. If you’re in the mood for some ad­ven­tur­ous eat­ing and drink­ing, this is the place.
