Is No­ble Rot a wine bar that serves ex­cel­lent food or a restaurant that serves great wine? The fact that it does both of these things and more is tes­ta­ment to the ab­so­lute skill of its own­ers: Amy Gil­lies, Josh Poin­ton, Ma­ciej Zimny and Jean-paul Hen­der­son. These four, who have all been in­volved with other suc­cess­ful Welling­ton eater­ies, have set the bar high here. Whether you’re a wine buff or a be­gin­ner who can’t tell the dif­fer­ence be­tween Barolo and Beau­jo­lais, the un­stuffy and re­laxed No­ble Rot has you cov­ered. The wine list is of bib­li­cal pro­por­tions (and fea­tures drops from places you’ve never heard of); the ser­vice is em­i­nently knowl­edge­able and the food is both vis­ually stun­ning and packed with sub­lime flavours – think a heav­enly smoked goat’s cheese souf­flé with pick­led beet, wal­nut, bit­ter leaves and fig, or a sub­lime duck liver par­fait with cured pork, hazel­nut, grape, sauternes jelly and brioche.
