Housed in a heritage building on Nelson’s main drag, Hopgood has been going strong since 2005 and last year, owners Kevin and Jane Hopgood extended the restaurant into the neighbouring space, creating a separate bar area. Head chef Aaron Ballantyne turns out interesting, expertly executed bistro dishes, with the focus on super-fresh, locally sourced seasonal ingredients. You might start with plump scampi with crumbed cauliflower and artichoke salsa in a lemony dressing, then move on to perfectly cooked Angus beef fillet with onions, mushrooms and a piquant salsa verde, finishing with honey-roasted pear with gingerbread, walnut granola ahnd buttermilk ice cream. Knowledgeable, welcoming staff will guide you through the solid drinks list, with a welcome selection of half-bottle options.
