So­phie Zalokar hails orig­i­nally from South Australia’s Barossa Val­ley re­gion, where she qual­i­fied as a chef and worked with Maggie Beer. She cooked all over the world be­fore re­turn­ing to Australia and mov­ing to Fre­man­tle with her hus­band Chris. Look­ing for a week­end prop­erty out of the city, the cou­ple ended up buy­ing a run-down col­lec­tion of hol­i­day chalets in the South­ern Forests re­gion of West­ern Australia. “My heart’s in the coun­try,” she says. Af­ter lov­ingly restor­ing the prop­erty, they launched For­agers Field – a farm-based cooking school and restau­rant with ac­com­mo­da­tion (for­ So­phie is pas­sion­ate about the great in­gre­di­ents of her adopted re­gion and re­cently pub­lished Food of the South­ern Forests, which cel­e­brates the food and pro­duc­ers of the area (see page 112 for an ex­tract). “It was a nat­u­ral ex­ten­sion of the re­la­tion­ships I’d built up with all the won­der­ful lo­cal grow­ers.”
