PROFILE ON: NIKKI VAN DIJK
Although well known at her local beach, Nikki first came to the world’s attention in 2010 in the surf movie, “First Love.” At 15 years of age the movie followed the lives of three passionate young girls from Phillip Island as they started their journeys towards making a career out of surfing. It seems apt that four years later, Nikki has done just that and this year is one of the rookies on the coveted World Tour of Surfing.
Born November 28th, 1994, Nikki was taught to surf by her dad and became the youngest ever to win a State Junior Champion when she took out the event in 2007 at only 12 years old. When she was only 14 years old Nikki won the wild card to compete in the WCT Rip Curl event at Bells Beach surfing her way to a 9th place finish against the top 17 women in the world. In 2012 Nikki won the ASP World Junior Title and last year qualified for the elite world tour.
This year Nikki has had an excellent start to her competitive surfing career. At the first 6 star event of the year, the Hurley Australian Open held in Manly, Nikki made it through to the quarter finals before being eliminated by Hawaiian surfer, Malia Manuel. At the second six star event in Newcastle, Nikki just missed out on a spot in the quarter final after facing a stacked heat with an on- fire Dimity Stoyle and eventual event winner, Malia Manuel. Nikki has definitely shown that she can hold her own in a talented pool of competitors.
Nikki has been sponsored by Rip Curl since being talent scouted when she was only ten years old and recently renewed her sponsorship with the surf brand. Nikki has also been given the opportunity to design her own set of fins and tailpads for one of her other sponsors, Komunity Project. Komunity Project, who produce surf hardwear and accessories, is founded, tested and designed by Kelly Slater, so for Nikki to be able to produce her own signature series is really exciting stuff.
As we were going to print, Nikki was competing in the first WCT event of the year, the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast. We wish her every success for her coming year…
