Engineering student gets a cool summer
Hamish Laing (pictured above), a mechanical engineering student at the University of Canterbury, is spending the summer working on engineering projects at Scott Base as a Sir Peter Blake Trust Antarctic Youth Ambassador.
The 24-year-old is working on an automatic reporting process for the base’s building management system, which will enable base staff to analyse how much energy, water and waste they are using.
Hamish is one of two Antarctic Youth Ambassadors on environmental expeditions, run in conjunction with Antarctica NZ and the Antarctic Heritage Trust.
Later this year another two Blake Ambassadors will join a NIWA research vessel in the Southern Ocean.
