Chinese firm Qingdao Unique Products Develop, a maker of 3D printers, has made what is thought to be the world’s largest 3D printer.

The printer can fabricate items as large as 12m square. The machine weighs more than 120 tons and was built at a dedicated 3D printing industrial park.

The printer will use graphene glass fibre reinforced plastic as a raw material, it is lightweight, strong, corrosionresistant, and environmentally friendly. The firm says a building of this size normally requires 150 tons of concrete.

It will print buildings in one go, unlike 3D printed houses made in Holland earlier this year that were printed in small sections and then assembled. Qingdao believes its technology could be used to build shelters following natural disasters.
