Reg­u­lar boiler tun­ing ac­cord­ing to EECA best prac­tice boiler tun­ing pro­ce­dure saves up to 25 per cent of your en­ergy bill.

Op­er­a­tion of steam and hot wa­ter boil­ers is a ma­jor contributor to the op­er­at­ing costs of man­u­fac­tur­ers, pro­duc­ers, busi­nesses or hos­pi­tals.

Boiler con­sumes in fuel on av­er­age four times its ini­tial cost per year. To cut on fuel con­sump­tion, boil­ers need to be tuned ev­ery six months. Tun­ing en­sures equip­ment op­er­ates at max­i­mum ef­fi­ciency by ad­just­ing the fuel to air ra­tio of the burner / boiler. A dol­lar spent on tun­ing re­sults in $ 30 of sav­ings. En­ergy Ef­fi­ciency and Con­ser­va­tion Au­thor­ity of New Zealand (EECA) of­fers business grants which can fund up to $ 5000 a year, or 40 per cent of the costs of a boiler tune-up, for boil­ers with ca­pac­ity over 1500 kW.

Boiler tun­ing in­cludes pre­lim­i­nar­ies, main­te­nance and gas anal­yser tun­ing and costs $1700 to $7000 de­pend­ing on the size of the boiler. EECA de­vel­oped Best prac­tice boiler tun­ing pro­ce­dure uni­fy­ing the stan­dard for boiler tun­ing and ap­proved ser­vice providers ser­vic­ing cus­tomers in New Zealand. Some ex­am­ples could be, for ex­am­ple, in­su­lat­ing parts of the sys­tem, in­stalling au­to­matic TDS (to­tal dis­solved solid) blow down sys­tem onto the boiler, re­view­ing cur­rent wa­ter treat­ment pro­ce­dures and per­form­ing reg­u­lar weekly clean-ups. They also make es­ti­mates on sav­ings ex­pected as a re­sult of th­ese ac­tiv­i­ties.
