Honey­well in­tro­duces nextgen­er­a­tion, flat-sheet pro­file mea­sure­ment for con­tin­u­ous web so­lu­tion ap­pli­ca­tions

Honey­well (NYSE:HON) Process So­lu­tions (HPS) has to­day launched its next-gen­er­a­tion scan­ning mea­sure­ment tech­nol­ogy de­signed to pro­vide faster, lower cost mea­sure­ment for con­tin­u­ous web so­lu­tion (CWS) ap­pli­ca­tions such as plas­tics, films, non-wovens and other f lat-sheet ap­pli­ca­tions.

Honey­well’s Zi­pLine Scan­ning Mea­sure­ment De­vice is a self-con­tained scan­ning mea­sure­ment de­vice that pro­vides high-speed mea­sure­ment of f lat sheets with­out the cost, size, and com­plex­ity of tra­di­tional scan­ners. Zi­pLine com­bines Honey­well’s proven sen­sor de­signs with a new, patented, f lat sheet scan­ning sys­tem that is eas­ier to in­stall, and has a lower to­tal cost of own­er­ship than tra­di­tional scan­ner de­signs.

“Zi­pLine is a break­through for CWS cus­tomers who need a scan­ner with a small foot­print that is easy to op­er­ate and in­stall,” said Ben Blanchette, prod­uct mar­ket­ing direc­tor, HPS. “The sim­pli­fied de­sign will go a long way to help cus­tomers lower their main­te­nance costs and will ben­e­fit both orig­i­nal equip­ment man­u­fac­tur­ers and Honey­well cus­tomers.”

Honey­well lever­aged decades of lead­ing process and tech­nol­ogy ex­per­tise to de­velop Zi­pLine. The new scan­ner is much smaller with f lex­i­ble mount­ing op­tions, but uses the same high-per­for­mance sen­sors as Honey­well’s tra­di­tional f lat sheet scan­ners.

“Zi­pLine is re­mark­able for what it doesn’t have – rigid scan­ner beams, drive belts, car­riage wheels, lin­ear bear­ings, power track, com­pressed air, or wa­ter,” said Blanchette. “Com­pared to a tra­di­tional scan­ner, Zi­pLine has 90 per­cent fewer parts, which, along with sim­pli­fied in­stal­la­tion and high-per­for­mance mea­sure­ments, con­trib­utes to a low cost of own­er­ship and un­par­al­leled value.”

Zi­pLine re­places the rigid O-frame struc­ture of tra­di­tional scan­ners with ten­sioned stain­less steel ca­bles that sup­port in­tel­li­gent, self-driven mea­sure­ment mod­ules. Ten­sioned ca­bles are also used to sup­ply power and sec­ondary sup­port to the mea­sure­ment mod­ules. A se­cure Wi-Fi net­work pro­vides com­mu­ni­ca­tion be­tween the mod­ules and the sup­port sys­tem, and an on­board com­pres­sor pro­vides air to the sen­sor.

Th­ese fea­tures elim­i­nate the need for a mov­ing power track to man­age ca­bles and hoses. Zi­pLine mea­sure­ment mod­ules are ca­pa­ble of scan­ning at high speeds – up to 400 mil­lime­tres per sec­ond – and de­liver high-res­o­lu­tion ba­sis weight pro­files. Flex­i­ble mea­sure­ment mod­ules can be re­moved for pe­ri­odic re­pairs along with easy ac­ces­si­bil­ity to the Zi­pLine’s mea­sure­ment sup­port pro­ces­sor to al­low sim­pli­fied main­te­nance.
