The path to busi­ness suc­cess isn’t magic says Lin­sey Siede, but there is a for­mula for suc­cess that con­sists of close at­ten­tion to fi­nan­cial sys­tems, cus­tomer fo­cus, anal­y­sis of cost struc­tures and, cru­cially, man­age­ment and lead­er­ship. Speak­ing at the Na­tional Man­u­fac­tur­ing Week, Aus­tralian in­dus­try vet­eran Siede who heads the Auto CRC’s Automotive Sup­plier Ex­cel­lence Aus­tralia (ASEA) out­lined com­mon suc­cess fac­tors that his or­gan­i­sa­tion has gleaned from seven years of work­ing with or­gan­i­sa­tions to an­a­lyse and de­velop pro­grams that im­prove their busi­nesses. To date, ASEA has com­pleted more than 500 im­prove­ment projects with com­pa­nies in automotive and broader in­dus­try sec­tors. “When we an­a­lyse what we have seen, it’s ap­par­ent there’s a ‘suc­cess jour­ney’ for SMEs,” said Siede, com­ment­ing that the jour­ney typ­i­cally starts with an as­sess­ment, which out­lines ar­eas that need to be im­proved and a busi­ness plan for the next five years. “Typ­i­cally, SMEs then re­alise that they need to be­come LEAN op­er­a­tors,” said Siede, “and then you have to work on your peo­ple and cul­ture so that LEAN can be sus­tained once man­age­ment fo­cus has moved else­where. “This first part of the jour­ney has an in­ter­nal fo­cus, which is all about
