An aromatic evening

Dish - - Review -

Guests were treated to a beautifully thought-out menu matched to exceptional Thornbury wines at a recent Dine with Dish event at Saan restaurant.

On the night of Dine With Dish with Thornbury, a selection of lucky Dish readers were in for a treat the minute the doors to Saan opened, with the enticing aroma of Northern Thai cuisine drifting out on to Ponsonby Road.

From the very first canapé, to the last lick of dessert, diners were wowed by the flavoursome menu created by Saan’s charming and talented head chef, Lek Trirattanavatin.

The evening kicked off with canapés of cured kingfish, topped with Saan’s signature ant eggs, wok-seared squid with chicken liver and lemongrass, served with Thornbury’s Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2016, a crisp, crunchy wine packed with classic citrus and passionfruit sorbet flavours.

Next up, the second course of coconut poached prawns, Miang Goong, and seared venison with Chinese celery, Geang Sadoong, was a taste sensation, which matched beautifully with the creamy texture of Thornbury’s Gisborne Chardonnay 2016. Each dish was expertly planned to accompany the outstanding wine.

A pairing of two vibrant aromatics – Thornbury Hawkes Bay Rosé 2015 and Thornbury Waipara Pinot Gris 2016 – were an effortless match to the punchy flavours of the third course entrees. Chargrilled pork skewers, soft-shell crab, spicy vegetable salad and sticky rice with honey caramelised chestnuts were all crowd-pleasers, made even more tantalising by the delicate floral freshness of the pinot gris and the red fruit spice of the rosé.

For the main event, course four, guests were won over by the twice-cooked tamarind beef-cheeks, Thai red fish curry served on banana leaf and seared Asian eggplant and tofu all matched with the elegant plum and black fruit aroma of Thornbury’s Hawkes Bay Merlot 2015.

Dessert rounded off the evening in the delicate form of a Thai tea mousse with the faintest hint of chilli, peppered through a dust of chocolate soil, perfectly complemented by Thornbury’s Waipara Riesling 2016.
