Lots of secret spots
Isobel Mackinnon is an independent theatre maker from Point Chevalier and works as a clown doctor in paediatrics.
What do you like best about living in Point Chevalier?
The sunsets are amazing when looking west from Point Chevalier. It is something about the roads being really wide which makes the skyline look enormous. The colours are incredible. Also, there are heaps of fruit trees by the creek at the back of Mount Albert - lots of secret spots.
Where’s the best place to buy dinner in your area?
It does not matter where in the world I am, there is always some part of me that wishes I was at Top Cafe on Cross Street eating dumplings and listening to the staff smashing cucumbers to smithereens out the back. It is so violent yet completely delicious. Who does the best fish ‘n’ chips? Greenwoods Fresh Catch in Epsom. As a child, wherever we lived in Auckland, this is where we would get our Friday night fish and chips after a hard week of colouring in and losing baby teeth or whatever it was I occupied my childhood with.
Who is the Kiwi you admire most – and why?
Dame Margaret Sparrow, who has spent her medical career advocating for reproductive rights. If I was Auckland’s mayor I’d... A little while ago I got hit by a car while cycling twice in two weeks. So, I would focus on cycle lanes. When I’ve got a free few hours I like to... Go to the Auckland public library and read Stone Mattress by Margaret Atwood surrounded
‘‘There is always some part of me that wishes I was at Top Cafe Dumpling House’’ Isobel Mackinnon
by strangers. I love how there is absolutely no library etiquette in the Auckland central library.
The spot in Auckland I’d recommend to tourists is...
Highwic House - actually any of the Historic Places Trust buildings. The history is so interesting. There’s some colonial tagging done with a diamond ring on a pane of glass. If you did that now it would be a work of art.
