Spring cleaning time at Howick Town Centre

- STAFF REPORTER

More than 70 volunteers came together last Saturday to support the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust (MBCT) clean-up of Howick Town Centre.

The annual sweep of tidy-ups in Auckland’s southern region is part of the Town and Local Centre (TLC) Clean-up Initiative, started this year by Mayor Len Brown.

Howick Village was the first of eight town centres to be beautified by volunteers who gathered to weed, wash, paint and tidy the area, in addition to planting and collecting 680kg of rubbish.

MBCT relationship manager Barbara Carney says the trust enjoys working with the community to inspire civic pride.

‘‘It’s most rewarding seeing local residents and community groups giving of their valuable time to make a difference and hopefully it will encourage a change in behaviour towards others caring for our environment.’’

Brown presented Howick community volunteers with certificates of appreciation for their work.

Volunteer Lyndsay Weaver wrote on Facebook: ‘‘[I] have been smiling to myself this morning as I walked past all the hard work that we all did on the weekend and seeing what a difference it has made.’’
