The Lions Club of How­ick stages its an­nual Wa­ter Safety Day event at Cockle Bay this Sun­day. Fun ac­tiv­i­ties in­clude teams raft­ing, beach races, face-paint­ing, trea­sure hunt and raf­fles.

Chil­dren will have the chance to prac­tise kayak­ing with adults, and prizes are pre­pared for lit­tle ones par­tic­i­pat­ing in sand-dig­ging. Bouncy cas­tles are set up on the grass for kids to play on. There will be hot chips, sausages, ice creams and re­fresh­ments on site. A group from Auck­landWater Safety will give talks about, for ex­am­ple, wear­ing life jack­ets while go­ing on the wa­ter. How­ick Lions Club pres­i­dent Grant Tay­lor says funds made from the event goes to How­ick Coast­guard, who will be present with a boat. ‘‘We really want the com­mu­nity to come, take part and en­joy,’’

Tay­lor says. The event is at the end of Shelly Beach Pa­rade on March 19, 10.30am to 2.30pm. En­try is free. East FM is ra­dio broad­cast­ing live from the event.
