Officers available to assist

Eastern Courier - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE - SERGEANT BRETT MEALE, OF HOWICK POLICE STATION

It’s timely to remind everyone of the staffing and opening hours of the Howick Community Police Station in Fencible Drive. The station houses myself, and the five community constables who service the greater area of Counties Manukau East.

The public counter at the Howick Community Police Station is open on Mondays and Thursdays only, 8am to 4pm. Should people wish to report an offence or incident in person or speak with myself or my staff about anything, then these are the best times. At other times we may be working from the station but are more likely to be out and about.

Should people need to speak with myself or a community constable, please call 09 261 1300 and they can be put through to our mobile phones.

Many reports and complaints can, and should be made, by phoning the Crime Reporting Line (CRL) on 09 261 1300. They can also receive information or updates for complaints that have already been made.

If people need to report a matter at a police station, Ormiston Road station is open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday, or alternatively Manukau Police Station is open 24 hours.

For offences or incidents requiring an immediate police response, people must call 111. We’ve recently had several instances of people phoning their community constable first and this has created a delayed response to the call.

The constable may not be working at that time or is unable to take a call, and those extra minutes can make all the difference in ensuring the appropriate response is deployed in a timely manner.

Meanwhile, the annual Counties Manukau Police Pay Parade is held in Howick next Friday, see story on page 1.

This relates to an old tradition in which police staff marched to the local magistrate, where their attire was inspected before receiving their pay packets. Thank goodness for internet banking nowadays.

A large contingent of uniformed police, CIB detectives and police employees will march on Picton Street from 9.30am before being inspected at the Howick RSA.
