Throttle down for rally car champs
Flat Bush-based rally car drivers Matt Jensen and Kieran Anstis are starting their attack on the NZ Rally Championships at this weekend’s International Rally of Whangarei.
The duo is targeting a strong top-five finish and have set a goal of taking out the category five championship this year.
‘‘We’ve had some great new sponsors come on board, including Panasonic, Elf, NZKW, Heller’s, Motorsport Engineering and Aarque Group,’’ Jensen says.
The team has also made upgrades to its EVO 9 rally car.
‘‘We’ve changed a few things on the car, including a new engine that’s more powerful and reliable, and a quicker steering rack which has helped me gain more confidence in my driving,’’ he says.
‘‘We’ve done a few testing events since the changes and it’s proven the car is a lot quicker.’’
Earlier this year Jensen found out he was a successful applicant to the Paddon Foundation, a programme setup by Kiwi WRC star Hayden Paddon to guide and support drivers and co-drivers.
‘‘It’s an incredible opportunity, the assistance and guidance is invaluable,’’ he says.
Elite Motorsport Academy graduate Anstis is in the co-driver seat. ‘‘I’m really looking forward to this season. Matt and I work well together and he’s put all the tools in place to have a successful year,’’ he says.
