A Chinese music instruments show is held in East Auckland and free for the public to view later this month.

Hosted by the Asian Library Trust charity, the 2017 Chinese Classical Music Instruments Show features four instruments - guzheng, erhu, yangqin and pipa.

Four Chinese Kiwi musicians will perform around 10 pieces and introduce their respective instruments to the audience.

The organiser has enlisted an English-Chinese interpreter to help engage non-Chinese speakers.

People have the chance to try and play the instruments by themselves, and communicate directly with musicians in the question and answer section.

Guzheng is also known as the Chinese zither, a plucked string instrument which is more than 2500 years old, and will be performed by Biying Liu.

Wenyan Li will play erhu, a bowed instrument known as the Chinese two-stringed fiddle. Yangqin, or hammered dulcimer, will be performed by Zengqi Yu, who is Li’s husband.

The pipa, a plucked string instrument with a history of over 2000 years, will be introduced by Min Gao, who led a Chinese music concert at Uxbridge Arts and Culture in Howick in May.

‘‘The four instruments we chose are quite unique and also fairly commonly seen. They are representative of Chinese instruments,’’ says Yinyin Yang, trust general manager and event organiser.

She adds they plan to organise more events in the future to introduce other Chinese instruments to New Zealanders.

‘‘These kind of activities enable people who are interested in Chinese culture to learn more about it,’’ Yang says.

‘‘It may also help facilitate the understanding and communication between Chinese and other cultural groups.’’

‘‘I hope the attendees enjoy the event. As long as people can get something out of this experience - be it a little bit of impression of something - we’ll feel rewarded.’’

The 2017 Chinese Classical Music Instruments Show is at the Asian Library Centre, 308 Ti Rakau Drive, Burswood, East Auckland, August 26, 1.30-3.30pm.
