East to get new water feature

A new children’s water feature is being built at Lloyd Elsmore Park Pool and Leisure Centre to make a splash for families this coming summer.

The ANZ Bank and Auckland Council are partnering to create a splash pad at the Pakuranga public complex which will have fountains, mist sprayers and elevated structures, designed to provide children of all ages with a free, safe and fun water play area.

ANZ retail and business banking managing director Antonia Watson, Howick Local Board chairman David Collings and children from the local Kauri Kids turned the first spadeful of dirt at the site on August 9 to start the construction.

The council’s head of active recreation, Rob McGee, says he’s happy with the way the partnership has been able to deliver a public project.

‘‘We worked together to identify what the opportunity might look like, looked at the various options and we ultimately agreed on splash pads.’’

Watson says the outdoor water playground will be an enjoyable addition to the pool facility for families.

‘‘You can’t beat a splash pad on a hot day. They’re safe, free and terrific fun.

‘‘We’re a proud part of this community and it’s exciting to be able to fund this splash pad which will be a magnet for kids and their families.’’
