Auckland Libraries has more than 1000 local and international zines for people to browse or borrow. They’re housed at the city Central Library, but most can be delivered to any branch. Zines are a contraction of magazines, often self- or independently-published, which allows minority artists and writers to record and distribute their works outside of traditional publishing circles. Auckland Libraries’ collection is based on a bulk donation received from the Cross Street Studios Zine Library when it closed in 2010. It’s been added to by personal donations, and the Spacething and Audio Foundation zine libraries also contributed to the collection last year. It includes a variety of subjects, including politics, personal narratives, visual arts, music, cooking and recycling.
