Mange-ridden dog found
The SPCA has launched an investigation following the discovery of a mange-ridden dog in East Auckland.
Auckland Council says its animal management team responded to a call about two dogs roaming around Howick’s Wellington Street last Saturday.
One, a black labrador, was registered and microchipped and returned to its owner. The other dog was referred to the SPCA.
A post on social media described the younger ‘‘little one’’ as appearing to be an entire male with ‘‘stunted growth’’.
‘‘He would not let anyone near him, just stayed with the other dog.’’
‘‘He had a severe case of mange, it breaks my heart. Have not personally seen anything like this before.’’
Several other posts expressed dismay at the dog’s condition.
‘‘Hopefully now he gets the help he needs. Poor little man.’’
An SPCA spokeswoman says the dog is a mixed breed and about two years old.
Due to the fact an investigation is under way she could only confirm the dog is with the SPCA.
‘‘If there has been a deliberate act of violence or neglect, where appropriate our inspectors can seek justice through the courts, acting as the voice for animals.’’
Anyone with any information about the dog is encouraged to call the SPCA on 09 256 7300.
