Lots of visitors, as well as past and present members joined the Zonta Club of East Auckland’s double celebration on October 27.

The event marked the special 30th anniversary of the organisation and also its annual awards ceremony.

Eight charter members helped cut the beautiful fruitcake bearing a Zonta yellow rose.

Robyn Fox, the club’s advocacy director, says the members are delighted to have served the Howick and Pakuranga community for three decades.

‘‘We’re exceptionally proud of the contributions we’ve made in ways both great and small,’’ she says.

‘‘Our focus has always been advocating for women and girls and we continue to do this.’’

Besides supporting national and international projects that advance the status of women, the club also backs community groups including the Sophie Elliot Foundation, Eastern Refuge Society, and Bellyful.

In recent years, it initiated scholarships for women in education to make a difference in their life chances.

The birthday is a ‘‘very significant milestone’’ for the club, member Gay Gallagher says, who also holds the New Zealand Zonta Z Club chair.

‘‘We’d love to encourage younger professional and business women to join the Zonta cause to ensure our club can continue for another 30 years.’’

The achievement of five East Auckland women and girls were acknowledged at the event.

The Founders’ Day Award went to Veronica Arnold for her work at the Pegasus Unit of Pakuranga College; Barbara Astill received a Service Appreci- ation Award; Howick College’s Inka Pleiss is recipient of the Year 12 Leadership Award, while the Presidents’ Scholarship Award goes to Amy Davis to help with her second chance in tertiary education.

Sara Khatau, of Macleans College, is awarded Young Women in Public Affairs and says she feels ‘‘very humbled’’.

‘‘Attending the award ceremony and having had the opportunity to listen to stories about how the club was founded 30 years ago made me appreciate how far women have come in such little time.’’

‘‘Our focus has always been advocating for women and girls and we continue to do this.’’
