New network to launch in east

Eastern Courier - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS - TARANNUM SHAIKH

Buses in East Auckland are changing for the better, in a bid for a simple, more frequent and connected bus network.

The new network will commence on December 10 with differing bus numbers, routes and bus stops.

Auckland Transport East network planner Luke Elliot says the three main and frequent bus routes will be seeing a change.

The existing 500 bus from Botany to the city and return will now be the 70 bus, while the 550 bus is becoming the 72C and 72M and will travel from Panmure to Botany, via Howick.

‘‘[These will] be every 10 minutes, seven days a week, between the hours of 7am and 7pm. Outside those hours, it’s every 15 minutes. It’s almost triple what the 500 does now,’’ Elliot says.

The new 72 services will run the full length of Pakuranga Road via Cook Street and Chapel Road (72C), or Millhouse Drive and Meadowlands Drive (72M).

To go from Panmure to the city a new route 70 bus has been added, which will run along the Ellerslie-Panmure Highway.

‘‘We’ve lined up the times so you can change up between the 72 and the 70, if you’re going on to Ellerslie or Newmarket,’’ Elliot says.

He adds that those that prefer just one bus to the city, need not worry.

‘‘We heard during consultation a lot of people say they wanted still to have a bus all the way into town, particularly students going to Symonds Street.

‘‘So at peak times, the 72M is replaced by the 72X. So that’s all the way into the city, via the motorway [similar to] 550X. That’s going to be every 10 minutes at peak times.’’

Similar changes are being made right around East Auckland, including the addition of more services in Ormiston and Flat Bush with the 35 bus, currently the 580 Botany to Manukau route. Three new buses and bus routes will also be replace the existing two routes at Half Moon Bay.

Full details about the new services, including a new timetable will be mailed out to East Auckland homes next week.

Schedules for information evenings that will be held from November 18 to December 6 will also be in the brochure.
