Auck­land also suf­fers from a vis­i­ble ‘smoggy’ brown haze on av­er­age 30 days a year. Guide­lines for ar­senic, ben­zene and benzo(a) pyrene in the air are also close to be­ing ex­ceeded. Lev­els of par­tic­u­late mat­ter in Auck­land’s air reg­u­larly ex­ceed stan­dards and guide­lines in­clud­ing the govern­ment’s National En­vi­ron­men­tal Stan­dards for Air Qual­ity. Ni­tro­gen ox­ides also ex­ceed stan­dards and guide­lines from time to time.
