Pres­sure from ad­vo­cacy or­gan­i­sa­tions in the US may see chim­panzees banned for use in biomed­i­cal re­search.

As it is, just two na­tions still use chim­panzees – the US and the African na­tion of Gabon. Re­search on chimps helped pro­duce a vac­cine for hep­ati­tis B, and on­go­ing re­search aims for one for Hep­ati­tis C, but the out­cry about the re­search could see the prac­tice banned in the US within a year.
