Aus­tralian pig farm­ers are to earn car­bon cred­its for cut­ting meth­ane emis­sions from their an­i­mals.

Farm­ers can ei­ther de­stroy the gas by flar­ing it, or use it to gen­er­ate heat and elec­tric­ity. More than 680 com­mer­cial pig­gery op­er­a­tions in Aus­tralia stand to ben­e­fit. The cost of in­stalling ba­sic meth­ane cap­ture in­fra­struc­ture is likely to range from around $75,000 to $200,000 de­pend­ing on the size of the pig­gery.
