Conscious Consumers is about promoting better business and helping consumers make ethical purchasing decisions. Cafes display badges – think of them as scout badges for cafes – in the window that let consumers know at a glance what practices the cafe commits to from serving only free range eggs to composting food waste. Kokako Café & Roastery in Grey Lynn is the latest Auckland Cafe to sign up as a Conscious Consumer cafe with an impressive nine out of nine possible badges on display. That means when you visit Kokako you can be sure you’ll be drinking batch roasted certified Fairtrade Organic coffee made with organic milk and eating seasonal, free range food. The café also has a special waste sorting system ensuring that your food scraps are either composted or sent to their worm farm. Managing director Mike Murphy notes that after championing sustainability for so long as a supplier signing up their new venture as a Conscious Consumers outpost comes intrinsically to a brand which has made it part of its DNA since the company started 10 years ago.
