By now, all things go­ing to plan, the Fruit Trees For Auck­land group will have planted 250 trees through­out the city in schools, early child­hood cen­tres and pos­si­bly on a grass verge near you. By the end of 2012, that num­ber will have swelled to 1000 new fruit trees for the re­gion. The ini­tia­tive was de­vel­oped to ben­e­fit chil­dren by help­ing them gain ac­cess to fresh, lo­cally grown fruit as well as de­vel­op­ing a greater un­der­stand­ing of the im­por­tance of eat­ing fresh fruit and lo­cally sourced pro­duce.“the schools and kinder­gartens in­volved in it share the same vi­sion of free and healthy food in our city,” says Ju­dith Holte­brinck, co-founder of the group.
