The Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, has an­nounced that the city’s two coal-Žred power plants will be shut down, one by the end of this year, the sec­ond in 2014.

The decision was made af­ter pro­longed pres­sure from ac­tivists and pub­lic­ity re­gard­ing the ef­fects of pol­lu­tion on the oc­cu­pants of Chicago. It is es­ti­mated by the Clean Air Task Force and Har­vard Univer­sity that coal-Žred power plants are re­spon­si­ble for the deaths of be­tween 13,000 and 34,000 peo­ple in the US ev­ery year.
