As Peter Yealands (pictured right) was thinking about the energy needed to heat water and the wine tanks in the winery, it occurred to him that the vine prunings trimmed after the harvest could provide that energy. The result is two purpose-built boilers, which burn bales of vine prunings and provide the energy required. It’s an extremely effective system, with just 5 per cent of the prunings needed to provide all the heat needed for the year.
