As Peter Yealands (pic­tured right) was think­ing about the en­ergy needed to heat water and the wine tanks in the win­ery, it oc­curred to him that the vine prun­ings trimmed af­ter the harvest could pro­vide that en­ergy. The re­sult is two pur­pose-built boil­ers, which burn bales of vine prun­ings and pro­vide the en­ergy re­quired. It’s an ex­tremely ef­fec­tive sys­tem, with just 5 per cent of the prun­ings needed to pro­vide all the heat needed for the year.
