A Washington study has shown that for the first time in a decade, global meat con­sump­tion de­creased last year, from 42.5kg per per­son in 2010 to 42.3kg in 20011.

How­ever over­all meat pro­duc­tion in­creased by 0.8% over the same pe­riod to 297m tonnes, and is ex­pected to in­crease fur­ther this year. In de­vel­op­ing coun­tries, it in­creased 25% dur­ing this time, whereas in in­dus­tri­alised coun­tries it in­creased just 2%.
