Seeing the light

Element - - Clean Technology -

There are currently over 1.5 billion people in the world who have no reliable access to mains electricity. These people rely, instead, on biomass fuels (mostly kerosene) for lighting once the sun goes down. Enter the Gravity Light. Still at concept stage, the Gravity Light will cost less than $10, does not have batteries, and is powered by, as the name suggests, gravity. Users fill a canvas bag with rocks or gravel, attach it to the hanging light, and the gearing as the bag slowly drops will power the light for half an hour. The Gravity Light creators are appealing for funding to take their creation to the world. To find out more visit deciwatt.org
