Auckland residents are being sought for a new Auckland Council initiative – ‘Sustainability Street’ – a neighbourhood approach to minimising waste, reducing energy and water consumption and encouraging local food production and sharing.
It is being piloted in Mt Albert, Kingsland, Sandringham, Mt Eden, Balmoral and Epsom.
Mt Eden resident Dave Watson, who is assisting with the pilots, has his own version of the programme, and his street now has two beehives, chickens, a raw milk co-operative, shared meals, worm farms and street parties (pictured) as a result of the connections made.
An introduction event was held last night in Mt Eden, with another this Wednesday, June 26 at The Taylor Room, Mt Albert Community Centre, at 773 New North Road.
