Auck­land res­i­dents are be­ing sought for a new Auck­land Coun­cil ini­tia­tive – ‘Sus­tain­abil­ity Street’ – a neigh­bour­hood ap­proach to min­imis­ing waste, re­duc­ing en­ergy and wa­ter con­sump­tion and en­cour­ag­ing lo­cal food pro­duc­tion and shar­ing.

It is be­ing pi­loted in Mt Al­bert, Kings­land, San­dring­ham, Mt Eden, Bal­moral and Epsom.

Mt Eden res­i­dent Dave Wat­son, who is as­sist­ing with the pi­lots, has his own ver­sion of the pro­gramme, and his street now has two bee­hives, chick­ens, a raw milk co-op­er­a­tive, shared meals, worm farms and street par­ties (pic­tured) as a re­sult of the con­nec­tions made.

An in­tro­duc­tion event was held last night in Mt Eden, with an­other this Wed­nes­day, June 26 at The Tay­lor Room, Mt Al­bert Com­mu­nity Cen­tre, at 773 New North Road.
