It has long been the veggie gardener’s favourite fertiliser, but seaweed is also becoming more popular for rural use.

Paeroa-based Agrisea New Zealand Ltd is a pioneer of the business, producing four different products for agriculture and horticulture.

Contrary to expectations of purely organic or biodynamic applications, 95% of their clients are actually conventional farmers wanting to cut down on urea and phosphate use.

The New Zealand native kelp species ( Ecklonia radiata) is the basis for Agrisea’s formulations. The natural brewing process eliminates the use of processing with heat, chemicals, freezing or dehydration that might ‘denature’ the sensitive nutrient balance, allowing the natural growth stimulants and micro-nutrients to be released in an active form to enhance soil and plant health.

AgriSea continues to develop its export relationships with a number of international opportunities, with much interest in the greater potency and effectiveness of New Zealand seaweeds with their higher levels of suphates and other compounds.
