Stephen Marr

Fashion Quarterly - - Profile -

@stephen_marr When Matt joined Stephen Marr, it was obvious from the beginning that he was talented and ambitious. Even in the early days he showed leadership potential and he made a natural transition from trainee to stylist – a good indication of his skill. Matt has this amazing knack for executing strong, technical work which still feels and looks effortless and he’s confident in his own ability, which is crucial in this industry. He can work under pressure across a wide variety of situations, tailoring his work and energy to each one, and still produce the goods. He is unflappable!

I’m extremely proud of how Matt has executed his creative directorship role. His ability to communicate an idea to his team and inspire those around him is very impressive. We are different in the ways in which we communicate but we recognise that, and endeavour to make this difference a strength, rather than a weakness (ironically, it takes good communication to achieve this). We have a great working rapport and we’re always bouncing ideas off each other.

I think the best advice I’ve ever given him was, ‘Stick to your strengths, work on your weaknesses, and know when to listen.’ It’s great getting to work alongside him, mentoring and challenging his decision making.

I admire the way Matt will tackle any challenge. The company has provided him with ample leadership and creative opportunities, both locally and abroad, and he’ll undoubtedly make his mark internationally. He’s quiet at times, but underneath it all he is a force to be reckoned with. I’m excited to watch it all unfold for him.
