Taihape dominated the King Country Teams Championships to win the teams gross by a massive 62 shots in the 6 man team 54 hole format with all scores counting averaging 77 per round.
The 2017 Championship was played at Waimarino with the weather slightly damp for 27 holes on Saturday but spring like and fine on Sunday. The course was expertly varied with both tee and pin placements for each round fitting for the occasion.
Taihape made a flying start with Matt Thomas shooting a 4 under the card 68 in the first round well supported by Denny Thompson, Koke Cashell, Duane Dick, Matt Booth and Kerry Wells.
The team had a 48 stroke lead after Saturdays 36 holes and had the major prize secured with 1 round to play. This was a superb result to defeat Waitomo, Te Awamutu, Taumaranui and Piopio Aria by such a large margin. To cap it off the Taihape 2 nd team consisting of Alan Thomas, Gary Thomas, Danny Mickleson, Peter Valentine, Jim Fannin and John Gilbert were 2 nd in the net on 1317 only 9 shots from the winner and securing the Munro Plate in the process.
On an individual basis Matt Thomas won the 54 hole gross in 216 (level with the card) Denny Thompson was runner up on 228 with 3 rounds of 76. Koke Cashell was the senior runner up Saturday gross on 151.
