FROM THE EDITOR
We’ve made our final edition for the year a special one by focusing on a serious challenge facing our region - earthquake-prone buildings.
Manawatu¯ and Rangitı¯kei regions have been marked down as high-risk zones with the huge number of buildings fitting the categories of those that could cause serious harm in the event of an earthquake.
While safety is paramount for our residents, and we should respect the learnings from the devastating earthquakes in Christchurch, what will this mean for our economy, identity and community?
It’s likely our small towns can not afford to strengthen these buildings and we may have very different-looking towns in future. The heritage-style buildings make our towns what they are and if those are demolished or replaced, what are we left with?

We wish you all the best for a wonderful festive season and we’ll be back again on January 18 for what will, no doubt, be a wonderful 2018. - Lisa Houston
