Gunman shot by police
A man shot by police at a popular Manawatu¯ campground was in a stable condition in Palmerston North Hospital.
Police were called to a ‘‘family harm incident’’ at the Vinegar Hill Camp Ground, on State Highway 54, north of Feilding, about 9.25am on Tuesday.
An armed man, 22, who was threatening a woman was shot by police and treated at the scene for a non-life threatening injury, Police acting Central District commander Inspector Keith Borrell said.
The man was in a stable condition and was to have surgery on an injury to his arm on Tuesday evening.
A Vinegar Hill regular, Barry, had been coming to the Rangitı¯kei River for 30 years.
Barry said things like this happened from time-to-time in the idyllic spot, known for its colourful New Year’s celebrations.
‘‘About two years ago I saw a person get shot [by a Taser].’’
The drama unfolded right outside his caravan, with the man running from the toilet block up towards his spot.
‘‘Police pulled out and said: ‘If you don’t lay down on the ground I will shoot you’.’’
But the incidents didn’t bother Barry.
