Feilding-Rangitikei Herald - - Taihape - SAM KILMISTER

Feilding’s only secondary school is on the lookout for a new principal as Martin O’Grady moves on.

O’Grady leaves Feilding High School at the end of term one next year to take up the role of principal at Rathkeale College in Masterton.

He came to the Manawatu¯ school last year, after a seven-year stint at Karamu High School in Hastings, to replace Roger Menzies.

O’Grady said in a statement that he had enjoyed ‘‘every minute’’ at Feilding High School.

‘‘However, the position at Rathkeale is unique and exciting and one I am looking forward to.

‘‘While it is hard to leave Feilding High School, this is made easier by the knowledge that the students at the school are achieving great things and will continue to do so.’’

Board of Trustees chairwoman Ellen Bartlett acknowledged the focus O’Grady had placed on academic achievement.

O’Grady also oversaw redevelopment of the school farms, started a comprehensive review of the school’s property and infrastructure, and maintained the school’s high level of achievement in sport, culture and art, Bartlett said.

O’Grady’s replacement will be named next year.

‘‘We are confident that the school is very well placed for the future and expect to attract another capable principal who can build on the strong foundation that exists.’’

O’Grady grew up on his family’s sheep and beef farm on the East Coast. He has a degree in agriculture from Massey University and a post-graduate diploma in teaching from Palmerston North’s Teaching College.

He also has a post-graduate diploma in educational leadership and administration.

At Hastings Boys’ High School, he taught biology, science, agriculture and horticulture.

He then moved to Lindisfarne College and ran a senior boarding school, before being appointed as assistant principal for four years. In 2008, O’Grady became principal of Karamu High School.

In 2014, he won a National Excellence in Educational Leadership Award and grant.

He is married to Sarah, a kindergarten teacher, and they have two children - Georgia, a teacher, and Sam, a law student. He is also a Justice of the Peace.

He leaves for Rathkeale College, where he replaces longserving principal Willy Kersten.

Martin O’Grady will leave Feilding High School at the end of term one next year.
