We don’t need any­one to tell us that we do great cof­fee in New Zealand, but it’s none­the­less nice when one of our baris­tas is hailed among the best in the world. Auck­lan­der John Gor­don, of cof­fee equip­ment sup­plier Go­rilla Gear, re­cently made it to the fi­nals of the World Barista Cham­pi­onships in Am­s­ter­dam. Com­pet­ing against the best of the best from 56 coun­tries, he ul­ti­mately came sixth in the com­pe­ti­tion, in which he cre­ated an espresso that ‘ex­tracted flavours of pas­sion­fruit and ki­wifruit acid­ity’ with ‘lime aro­mat­ics’ and a ‘smooth, vel­vety tex­ture’.
