Hopes high for annual collection
Child Cancer Foundation’s annual appeal week is running until March 29 and local coordinators want to raise more this year than ever before.
Child Cancer Foundation Franklin coordinator Susie Hare has been collecting for four years and said while they raised $15,000 last year in the area, this year they are aiming higher.
Susie’s son Joshua, 15, is a leukaemia survivor after being diagnosed when he was four and a half, which prompted Mrs Hare to join the organisation.
‘‘It’s not a club you want to join but you meet some amazing people,’’ she said.
Mrs Hare said the community offer a lot of support but volunteers are still needed for the two-hour collecting stints in Papakura and Waiuku.
The Child Cancer Foundation helps in many ways to reduce the suffering and stress of children and their families during their journey with cancer, through ongoing practical, emotional and financial assistance.
Donations can be made to the appeal collectors or supporter bead bracelets can be bought for $10.
The beads are given to the children to visually represent every challenge they have overcome along the treatment journey.
Any $10 bead bracelet purchase between March 9 and June 30 2009 will give you the chance to enter the draw to win a Hyundai Santa Fe.
To volunteer for the Franklin appeal Mrs Hare can be contacted on 09 292 7717 or 027 947 643.
On Friday March 27 staff from Professionals Pukekohe will also be set up at various points in and around Pukekohe collecting donations for the Child Cancer Appeal, so keep an eye out for their red jackets and please give generously. There will also be a collection box at their office at 187 King St.
