After ongoing vandalism Pukekohe North School pupils can finally fill their water bottles thanks to new water fountains from a Government grant.
A $ 10,000 grant from Counties Manukau District Health Board, as a part of its Nutrition Grant Fund programme, was given to the school to fix the drinking water supply that was damaged by vandalism.
The school has been constantly repairing and replacing taps due to damage after hours and during weekends, said principal Robyn Withers-Lauer. ‘‘We applied for the grant and they have set up all new water fountains with a lockable frame and we haven’t had any more damage, so it’s really great.’’
The damage to the taps also meant an excessive amount of water was lost which was costly for the school, said Mrs Withers-Lauer.
With the new fountains, pupils are being encouraged to have water bottles in class and lessons are being held to promote healthy eating and the benefits of water.
The water fountains were put into the school this term and have a special tap to fill drink bottles.
The Nutrition Fund is Government funding available for initiatives that promote healthier eating in early childhood education services and schools.
