We Never Give Up a new start
Over Christmas an organisation that provides weekly social bowls for people with disabilities stated it was closing.
The Never Give Up group had been running for 17 years, but due to a lack of volunteers, and the retirement of key helpers, it was decided to stop the service, held at Pukekohe Cosmopolitan’s sport complex.
However, when Ralph Dando heard how much this had saddened the regular attendees, he knew he had to do something about it. The group has now reformed, under the name We Never Give Up, and Dando is the treasurer. Weekly sessions begin on February 22 from 9.30-11am on Wednesdays.
‘‘It’s been good, and I didn’t want to see it die...That’s why I decided to carry on. There’s a few that got really upset when they were told it was finishing up at our Christmas dinner...one man had tears in his eyes.’’
Dando is hoping to recruit more volunteers to ensure the group comes back stronger than ever.
‘‘No one seems to want to volunteer these days. We are asking if people can just give up an hour and a half on a Wednesday.
‘‘The main thing is that they are helping people with disabilities, and those recovering from strokes.’’
